Trend Watch – Memphis
Recent interior shows have thrown up many wonderful trends that we’ll be keeping an eye on this year, but a G Plan HQ favourite is the revival of the Memphis style. The movement first originated in the early 80s in Milan, Italy, when a group of architects and designers began producing Postmodern furniture, ceramics, fabrics and metal objects. A key feature of their work was the combination of man-made and natural textures, and the inclusion of plastic laminate in their structures.
The Memphis Group’s work was highly decorative with strong influences of Art Deco with bold shapes and strong lines, and Pop Art with bright primary-style colours and a futuristic appearance. There are lots of ways you can introduce elements of the Memphis trend into your home. Dot strong angular ornaments around the room, or if you’re really committed to this revival then try a quirky bookshelf to house accessories and plants.
Why not invest in a statement rug? Be daring with your choice of colour and pattern to make it the focal point within your room. As the trend takes elements from a number of different design movements there is a sense of rebellion, so don’t be afraid to clash colours to create a feeling of the unexpected within your living space.
Remember with Memphis, you can make it your own. Whether it’s just adding a finishing touch such as a primary coloured atom wall clock, or fully embracing the colourful chaos with a statement sofa and painted walls, the room should reflect your own experiences and personality as well as showing off the trend.
Incredibly tactile and filled with colour, this style is a feast for the senses and we are thrilled that it’s making a come back. Head over to our Pinterest board to find out other ways to use the Memphis style in your home.
